Growing up in a very musical household in Northern Ireland, Marty started out playing the Bodhran (Irish frame drum) and performing in marching bands from the age of 6. His drumming potential was spotted and nurtured by John Wilson (Van Morrison, Taste etc.), exposing Marty to a vast range of musical genres, and allowing him, at an early age, to play with the best musicians Ireland had to offer.

Marty spent his teens playing in everything from jazz ensembles to punk and metal bands. During his late teens, an interest in Latin music and Jazz developed which lead him to live and study in Sao Paulo and Cuba. Upon returning, he attended the Institute of Contemporary Music (ICMP) in London, obtaining a Bachelors Degree in Music Performance, and winning the Most Improved Drummer award.

In the years since, Marty has played and toured with a variety of artists, honing his playing style to blend solid groove playing with a sophisticated rhythmic sense – and always approaching his performances with passion, enthusiasm and a deep love of music.
